If you struggle to make decisions in life and business, there are a range of different tools within NLP that can help you become a more efficient decision-maker.

Anchoring

This is where you associate a particular state or emotion with a physical gesture or trigger. You can use anchoring for decision-making, by creating positive anchors to recall the times when you’ve made successful decisions. When you are next faced with a choice, you’ll be able to trigger that anchor to access those positive feelings and confidence. Visualisations

NLP often incorporates guided visualisations to help you reach a desired state or outcome, often called ‘future timeline’ when placed where your unconscious mind will recognise it. You can use this technique to visualise the potential outcomes of the decision you are trying to make – remember to do this with a balanced view, not just the positives, imagine what could go wrong too and your brain will problem-solve it and stop you catastrophising. Really imagining each possible outcome can help you choose which version best aligns with what you want.

Reframing

We often encourage reframing, a process that involves looking at a situation from different perspectives. When making a decision, try to reframe the problem to see it from various angles. It can help you gain a deeper understanding of the possible outcomes and lead to better choices. You could ask yourself things like, what would or wouldn’t happen if you did or didn’t do it.

Meta-Modelling

This is something we use to help identify and challenge limiting beliefs or assumptions you have. Examine the language you use when discussing a decision (even if the discussion is happening in your head) and identify any negative or limiting beliefs. Once identified, you can work on reframing those beliefs more positively.

Timeline Techniques

This is a method used for exploring your timeline – past, present, and future. Using this helps you to gain a broader perspective on the decision you are trying to make, by considering how it aligns with your long-term goals and values. You can even think back to times when making this decision would have had a different impact and looking at whether that impact would be better or worse at this point in your timeline.
