The coaching of someone’s beliefs and feelings is significantly different from the coaching of their habits and circumstances, as they are related more to internal aspects of an individual’s psyche rather than the external or behavioural elements. Here’s a look at the differences:

Coaching beliefs vs. habits

Beliefs are deep-rooted within a person and they shape their perspective and guide their actions. When you coach someone’s beliefs, it involves making them think more about themselves, others, and the world. Beliefs influence how a person sees a situation and the decisions they make, for example, believing in their ability to learn and grow from mistakes is a coaching belief that can help drive their resilience and improvement.

Habits are behaviours that are repeated or actions that are done automatically without really thinking about them. While beliefs have an influence on a person’s habits, the habits themselves are more about completing actions and routines. Coaching habits often involve things like reflection, active listening, or goal setting, which can all support someone’s personal or professional growth.

Coaching feelings vs. circumstances

Feelings are emotional states that come in response to internal or external catalysts. An essential part of coaching is understanding and managing emotions to help a person with their self-awareness and effective communication. This means being aware of emotions, understanding where they originate from, and learning how to respond to them effectively. Coaching often involves diving in and exploring someone’s fears, doubts, excitements, or joys, and navigating them through any troubles they may have with them.

Circumstances are usually conditions outside of a person’s control or situations that they encounter. This can be things like environmental factors, the relationships they have with others, life events that have happened, or influences that society has on them. Coaching around circumstances helps a person to navigate these external factors, and can be done by reframing their perspectives, helping them to develop coping strategies, or helping them to make changes that better align with their personal goals and values.

Coaching often addresses a person’s beliefs and feelings to help with their personal growth and development, while habits and circumstances very much focus on beliefs and feelings and are more about addressing the internal aspects of their mindset and emotional landscape.
