One of the most important skills you can develop when it comes to coaching is understanding people and deepening your connections with them. It’s a valuable skill that can greatly enhance your relationships in all walks of life, but in particular when you are trying to get someone to share their deepest and darkest thoughts with you, in order to help them.
It’s so important to pay close attention to what people are saying to you. Avoid interrupting or formulating your response while they’re speaking, and instead, focus on understanding their perspective and feelings around what they are talking about. Listen to learn, not listen to answer. You should also use your empathy to see the world from the other person’s point of view. Recognising and sharing their emotions can create a strong bond between you and them.
Make sure you are paying attention to their body language, facial expressions, and tone of voice to get a complete understanding of their feelings and intentions. Ask them open-ended questions that will encourage them to share more about themselves. You’ll get much more meaningful conversations this way.
Make sure you are giving them your undivided attention and spend some time discovering shared interests or experiences that you can both relate to. A real deep connection can come from shared stories.
It’s important to respect differences
People have diverse backgrounds, beliefs, and perspectives and you can learn a lot from them. Be patient and allow relationships to develop naturally through the discussions that you have.
Opening up about your own thoughts, feelings, and experiences can really help others to do the same. It’s also a good idea to pay attention to the little nuggets of information they feed you, like birthdays, interests and life events, because it will show them that you value them.
More than anything, just be supportive. Offer encouragement to people who are going through challenging times. Being there for someone during their difficult moments can create a strong connection between you.
Do remember to maintain boundaries though. While it’s essential to be open and empathetic, it’s also important to establish and respect personal boundaries in any relationship.
