Understanding your identity and changing old patterns with neurological levels
Neurological levels help explore and change aspects of identity and behaviour. The concept was developed by Robert Dilts and it is often represented as a hierarchy of six levels, each influencing the ones below it. From top to bottom, they are:
Environment
This represents the external factors in your life, such as your physical surroundings, the people you interact with, and the situations you encounter. It’s where your behaviour is most observable.
Behaviour
This is your observable actions and reactions and includes the specific things you do in response to your environment.
Capabilities and Skills
These are the abilities that you have developed through learning and practice.
Beliefs and Values
These are the principles that guide your behaviour and decisions. They shape your worldview and determine what it is that you consider being important.
Identity
This is how you see yourself and how you believe others see you. Your identity is closely tied to your self-esteem and self-worth.
Spirituality, Purpose or Mission
This represents your deeper sense of purpose and meaning in life. It’s about your connection to something larger than yourself.
There are steps you can take to change old patterns and understand your identity using neurological levels.
Recognise the old pattern or behaviour you want to change
Be specific about what it is and when it occurs.
Determine at which neurological level the pattern is operating
Is it at the behaviour level, beliefs and values level, or deeper in your identity?
If the pattern is rooted in your beliefs and values, question those beliefs
Are they serving you well, or do they need to be adjusted to support what it is you want to change?
If the pattern is deeply tied to your identity, work on reframing how you see yourself
You can develop a new self-concept that aligns with the desired change.
Set New Capabilities and Skills:
Develop the necessary skills and capabilities to support the new behaviour or pattern you want to establish
Modify your environment or surroundings to make the desired change happen
Surround yourself with supportive people and situations.
Reflect on your deeper sense of purpose and how the change aligns with it
This can provide you with motivation and a sense of fulfilment.
Changing old patterns and understanding your identity through neurological levels can be a complex process. It often involves introspection, self-awareness, and a willingness to challenge and reshape your beliefs and self-concept.
